‘Rivera’ bermudagrass is a seeded variety that has cold-tolerance, color, and quality characteristics equivalent to popular vegetative varieties. ‘Riviera’ is a suitable sports turf for the transition zone. Turf establishment with ‘Riviera’ seed is slow, sometimes taking six weeks to reach 100% cover. Several sulfonylurea herbicides have become accepted for use on established bermudagrass and could be used during establishment of ‘Riviera’ to control summer annual weeds. The objective of these studies are to determine safe, weed control options for establishing ‘Riveria’.

When seed are initiating germination and/or existing seedlings are small, ‘Riviera’ is very sensitive to herbicides. One week after seeding, at labeled rates, applications of RevolverTM (foramsulfuron), CertaintyTM (sulfosulfuron), ManorTM (metsulfuron), are safest, while MonumentTM (trifloxysulfuron), TranXitTM (rimsulfuron), and flazasulfuron (registration pending) were too injurious. TranXitTM, MonumentTM, and flazasulfuron, are less injurious applied after uniform stolon development (about 5-6 weeks after planting), and do not hinder establishment. Control crabgrass with DriveTM shortly after emergence or MSMA after two mowings. If goosegrass is your problem, RevolverTM is safe for application at most any timing. Nutsedge is controlled by sulfosulfuron at any timing or with MonumentTM after uniform stolon development. ManorTM can control broadleaf weeds and is safe at all timings but not yet labeled for use on seedlings.
